Best Neighborhoods and Accommodation in Strasbourg

1. Grande Ile de Strasbourg

Located in the heart of the city and surrounded by the Ill Canal, the Grande Ile de Strasbourg is the neighborhood of the cathedral and a great number of historical monuments.

This is where you will find the top things to do in Strasbourg, Place Kléber, the famous Christmas Market at Place Broglie (one of the best Christmas Markets in France and Europe!), the greatest commercial activity, department stores, and small boutiques. There are also numerous cafés, bars, and winstubs, especially in the Grand’ Rue and around the Place Kléber.

As this is the most touristy part of the city, the Strasbourg accommodation offer apartments, hotels, and youth hostels is also bigger.

Where to stay in Strasbourg Grande Ile:

Hotel Cathédrale (top choice): located just opposite Notre Dame de Strasbourgthis hotel comes with incredible and spectacular views over the cathedral. The rooms are bright and spacious, with comfortable beds, and there’s public parking available nearby.

Other accommodation in Strasbourg Grande Ile:

2. La Petite France

La Petite France

This is the most picturesque neighborhood in Strasbourg. Located on the banks of the river Ill, La Petite France was the district of fishermen, millers, and tanners, who lived in the oh-so-cute half-timbered houses that you can still see today.

La Petite France is also a good place to stay in Strasbourg: pretty and a stone’s throw away from the Grande Ile, which is definitely busier.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, La Petite France district guarantees a charming, memorable stay, with some of the prettiest hotels in Strasbourg and cozy apartments.

Where to stay in Strasbourg, La Petite France:

Pavillon Regent Petite France (top choice): located in the most beautiful section of Strasbourg, this is a lovely hotel with comfortable rooms, great facilities, and an excellent breakfast.

3. The European Quarter – Orangerie

The European Quarter is home to the European institutions in Strasbourg. It is a quiet and beautiful neighborhood, far from the center’s hustle and bustle, where most of the ex-pats in Strasbourg live.

The European Quarter is ideal for business trips, with a wide choice of luxury hotels. It is also green, wide-open spaces like the Orangerie park, perfect for a stroll after work.

Where to stay in Strasbourg, The European Quarter – Orangerie:

Boutique Hotel des XV (top choice): Located 100 m from the famous park of the Orangerie and a 20-min pleasant walk to the Old Town, this lovely Strasbourg hotel offers comfortable rooms with a refined décor and great facilities. On top of that, there’s the attentive and welcoming staff to ensure a perfect stay in Strasbourg.

4. Krutenau

Strasbourg River Cruise

Next to La Petite France, there’s the Krutenau neighborhood, adjacent to the University of Strasbourg. Krutenau is a lively area great to explore day and night, popular amongst students, and with many bars and other nightlife venues.

Le Krut, as locals say, is a good place to stay in Strasbourg. It’s a mere 5-min walk to the cathedral and other top sights, and with Strasbourg hotels of all budgets.

Krutenau is also the best place to stay in Strasbourg if you want to meet people and party, with a wider choice of restaurants, from vegan to Italian or Lebanese.

Where to Stay in Strasbourg for the Christmas Markets

All the areas mentioned above are good to enjoy the Strasbourg Christmas Market. However, beware that all the Grande Ile is closed to car traffic during this period, so you will have to cross this area on foot.

Many people visiting the Alsace Christmas Markets by train book their hotel in Strasbourg near the train station because they don’t need to cross all the city pulling the trolley or carrying a big backpack. From this Strasbourg neighborhood, it only takes a few minutes to reach the different Christmas markets.

Two good and hotels in Strasbourg near the train station are Hotel Tandem (budget), and the Best Western Plus Monopole Métropole (luxury). These hotels always get the best reviews from the users.

Best Hotels in Strasbourg with Parking

If Strasbourg is part of an Alsace road trip, or you plan to visit the Alsace villages or other places in the region on day trips, you will need a car and a safe place (and ideally not expensive) to park it near your hotel in Strasbourg.

Most of the center is pedestrian all the year round so finding a place to park your car in Strasbourg is a real pain unless you book a hotel with private parking.

For our Alsace road trips, we use and we recommend the Comfort Hotel Strasbourg Montagne Verte. This is a budget hotel located by the river Ill, less than 2km from La Petite France, with free private parking and an excellent breakfast. In addition to all this, it is close to the access to the E52 highway so leaving the city for your day trips from Strasbourg is straightforward.

If you prefer to stay more central, the Sofitel Strasbourg Grande Ile (luxury) and the Best Western Plus Monopole Métropole (luxury) also have private parking (the price of the parking is not included in the room price).

Public parking within the city costs from 15 to 30€ a day.
